The
problem

Following breast cancer treatment many women feel as though they have lost part of themselves and their femininity while other don’t want to have to wear a prosthesis for the rest of their lives. There are many different options to choose from and Mr Athanassopoulos will guide you through them to find which reconstruction is suitable for you.

The
procedure

The process of breast reconstruction requires multiple procedures to rebuild the breast and nipple.

TRAM/DIEP flap reconstruction is performed in the NHS and requires taking part of the lower tummy and transferring them to the chest using microsurgery. The tissues are then carefully shaped to create the breast mound.

An alternative is the latissimus Dorsi flap that involves moving the latissimus dorsi muscle from the back to the chest. AN implant is usually placed beneath the muscle for a little extra volume.

Implant based reconstruction is a good choice for women who have had risk reducing mastectomies or who have good soft tissue cover that allows an implant and an artificial dermal matrix to be inserted. Often an inflating implant needs to be used to stretch the skin before the final implant is placed.

Fat transfer can help supplement a breast reconstruction and improve old reconstructions and is a procedure commonly performed to improve defects after wide local excision and tight painful scars after radiotherapy.

Women who have had breast cancer treatment are candidates for breast reconstruction. It doesn’t matter when the original treatment took place. Improvements can be made at any point in time, irrespective of whether its something minor like a tight scar or something more significant.

Breast reconstruction surgery is routinely performed in the NHS. It may be more convenient and faster for treatment out with the NHS.
